A bed bug infestation is undoubtedly a stressor, especially if it grows out of hand. Bed bugs populate quickly, so one bed bug can become thousands in just a few months. Thus, the quickest and easiest way for home, property, and business owners to eradicate bed bugs is by enlisting the help of pest control in Richmond

Read on to learn about the early signs of bed bugs and what it’s like to live with a bed bug infestation. We also explain how to stop bed bugs from returning and how to get rid of bed bugs in your home permanently.

What Are The Early Signs Of Bed Bugs?

If you have bed bugs in your Richmond home, there are a few telltale signs you’ll notice and shouldn’t ignore:

  • Bug bites on the skin left exposed during sleep
  • Bloodstains on bedding and pajamas as a result of bed bugs feeding
  • Dark, rust-colored stains on walls, bedding, or upholstery, caused by bed bugs’ excrement
  • Small, oval-shaped bugs, measuring a quarter-inch long, on and around bedding or areas where people and pets sleep, such as recliners and sofas

What Is It Like To Live With A Bed Bug Infestation?

Living with a bed bug infestation is not necessarily dangerous to the health of people and pets, but it’s known to put a damper on mental health, causing stress.

The lingering thought of having bed bugs in the home and potentially nearby as one sleeps causes stress, anxiety, insomnia, and paranoia, among other issues.

Stop Bed Bugs From Ever Coming Back

Dealing with a bed bug infestation can be frustrating, and although these pests are hard to prevent, there are a few precautions to take to avoid their return, such as:

  • When Traveling, Handle Your Luggage Carefully: When you arrive at your destination, place your luggage on a luggage rack instead of the floor. Before heading back home, put your luggage in a plastic luggage bag, and after your return, vacuum the inside of your suitcase thoroughly and wash all contents.
  • Don’t Put Clothes On The Bed: Avoid placing clothes directly on beds or bedding when changing clothes or unpacking.
  • Declutter Your Space: Excess clutter provides bed bugs and other pests with room to hide and thrive. Remove all clutter, especially from bedrooms, and avoid storing anything underneath beds.
  • Install Door Sweeps: Since it’s more common for bed bugs to accidentally be brought inside instead of entering themselves, installing door sweeps can help keep bed bugs out of bedrooms.
  • Inspect All Secondhand Items: It’s best to refrain from purchasing used items to avoid bed bugs. But if this isn’t realistic, be sure to examine all items before bringing them in the home; this includes looking underneath and inside of upholstered items, such as couches and chairs, and washing all clothing immediately.
  • Use Essential Oils: Mix about ten drops of peppermint, lemongrass, or tea tree oil in a spray bottle, add water and spray throughout the home.

How Do I Get Rid Of Bed Bugs In My Home Permanently?

Because bed bugs are almost always carried into the home by those who live there, it’s nearly impossible to guarantee these pests will never return. However, regularly scheduled home pest control services will most certainly help keep them at bay-and for good.
